LA'S Black Business Scavenger Hunt

August 2021

We had so much fun with you the entire month of August!  Thank you to everyone who participated in LA’s first Black Business Scavenger Hunt! We had over 35 incredible businesses participate!

Each week we released clues leading to amazing black-owned businesses, and you all played along and discovered each new treasure. The winners were announced at our August pop-up Farmers Market in Compton, and won prizes from Queen Boutique, Bea’s Bayou Skincare, Hella Awkward, Hotville Chicken, Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, Post & Beam, Kicks B Clean, Patria Coffee, Uplift Us Marketplace, Bloom & Plume, Compton Vegan, Vurger Guyz, and Los Angeles Nomadic Division!

  • Follow @Prosperity.Market on Instagram.
  • Earn points by visiting participating businesses and take a photo using our virtual photo booth.
  • Post your photo on Instagram, tag @prosperity.market, and use the hashtag #PMBizHunt2021 OR if you are not on IG, email your photos to admin@prosperitymarketla.com.

How It Works

  • Prosperity Market will release a master treasure map and word bank of black-owned businesses in LA.  This is the first clue.  It will remain active throughout the month of August.  *Not every business in the word bank is a stop in the scavenger hunt.
  • Each week we will release a new list of clues and a piece of the treasure map to help guide you on your hunt.
  • Most clues will be active for the week, and there will also be “flash clues” which are only active for the day.
  • Each business you visit is worth 1 point.  For your point to count, you must take a photo at the business using our virtual photo booth.  You can find the photo booth QR code in participating businesses.
  • You must post your photo on Instagram, tag @prosperity.market and use the hashtag #PMbizhunt2021 OR you can email your photos to admin@prosperitymarketla.com
  • You can earn extra points by making a purchase at each of the participating businesses.  Make sure to show your purchase in the virtual photo booth photo to receive the extra points.
  • Other ways to earn extra points – 
    • If the participating business has a Nipsey mural, take a photo using our virtual photo booth.
    • If the participating business has the BLK NWS exhibit, take a photo using our virtual photo booth.
    • Take a photo with the business owner using our virtual photo booth.
    • Don’t forget to post your photo on Instagram and tag @prosperity.market and use the hashtag #PMBizHunt2021 OR you can email your photos to admin@prosperitymarketla.com for the points to count.

Week 1

  • What can we say about this iconic shop? They have the best fashion, and all the best drops. From NY to LA the Union is clear. If you want to be fresh, then you better start here.
  • If you are vegan or not, you’ll follow these Guyz.  Go ahead and order that burger, don’t forget fries! (and tots…bomb!)
  • Riding down Ventura Blvd, don’t forget this stop. If you need anything for black hair, this is where to shop.
  • This business was started by a team of 2, their main goal is to uplift you!
  • Royal. Regal. It’s how you will feel.  If you like plants, this shop will appeal
  • Hard shell, soft shell, order all you can eat, don’t be timid! Their cheesecake can’t be beat and the Sky is the limit!
  • Band of thieves, and theives have vices, but they still appreciate art when left to their own devices ***Double points if you find the pink wall & the Tupac mural

  • Peace and Love, blessings to all! This healthy Caribbean cuisine is always a great call. Fresh off the grill, hot off the press. With 3 locations, just choose the nearest address.
  • Around the world, To & Fro, one sip of this coffee and you are good to go.
  • Don’t be Insecure, you can climb to the top.  You’ll be so glad you did once you make it to this shop.
  • Coming up with this clue, we sure had to ponder, but one sip of this coffee, and wander no longer.
  • You can call it the homeland for freshly roasted beans. You can get coffee, books, plants, all sorts of things. If you’re in Compton and craving caffeine, This is first on the roster, you’ll love the whole team.
  • This mini market’s a staple, it’s been here for years. You can get your beverage of choice when it’s time to cheers. You can learn from BLKNWS, and salute Neighborhood Nip, and say hi to Kelli before you dip.
  • If you’re headed South, stop here for your coffee. They do so much for LA and they do it for free. Food giveaways, COVID tests, whatever you need. This family shop cares for the community indeed..
  • At this melanin market there is so much to see, If you’re riding down Crenshaw, they are here bi-weekly. A market now known by another name, But the All Black Vendors are one and the same.

active 8/15 – 8/22

  • Sole not for sale, but these kicks have a price. You can buy clothing and jewelry, and everything nice. They practice group economics, it’s quite the affair. This store is for the fly and socially aware.
  • This place is natural, organic, and plastic free. You’ll live Nappily ever after. It’s the best place to be.
  • If you are looking for knowledge, if you are looking to learn, then this is the place to start and return. You’ll find every topic that you want to know. Books for the kids, or books just for show.
  • This place is meant for Sundays to spend, nothing but black vendors from end to end. You can eat good, shop good, dance to the drum beat. Spending time with your people is always a treat. It takes a village, we know this is the truth. And we are black excellence, and this is the proof.
  • If I didn’t know any better, I’d think it was Tony Hawk, but it’s the Neighborhood kids, who’ve got it on lock.
  • If you want to take a Ride, grab your bike and lets roll. building community is always the goal. If you’re in the village, look for the orange store. And get bonus points if you find Major’s mural at the door.
  • Don’t be Insecure, you can climb to the top.  You’ll be so glad you did once you make it to this shop. If you missed this clue the first time, don’t you fret. There’s several locations, so there’s still time yet!
  • This LA staple is Simply the best.  They have a Whole menu for you to test.  Purchase Some, or purchase all.  Whatever you get will be a great call.
  • This staple on Crenshaw started with a cart, and they warmed their way into all of our hearts. They have meatless Mondays, so vegans come eat. Vegan or not, these hotdogs can’t be beat.
  • If you eat at this restaurant, you’ll Beam with delight.  It’s all so delicious, and made just right. Make sure you take a photo and make sure to Post! And if it’s Sunday Brunch then make sure to toast.
  • From Nashville to Crenshaw, this chicken is fire. Spicy or mild, it’s made to your desire.
  • Follow the scent, it won’t lead you astray. They roll around town in the most fabulous way. Candles, air freshener, whatever you need. Just follow these Wheels to smell good indeed.

  • Hard shell, soft shell, order all you can eat, don’t be timid! Their cheesecake can’t be beat and the Sky is the limit! You found them on Pico, that’s the flagship store. But if you’re on the westside, you can come here for more.
  • The flowers bloom and the coffee drips. You will wake right up with a morning sip. Raise your fist and hold your flowers because coffee is their superpower.
  • Don’t be Insecure, you can climb to the top. You’ll be so glad you did once you make it to this shop. If you missed this clue the first time, don’t you fret. There’s several locations, so there’s still time yet!
  • If you missed them on Melrose, you can find them downtown. These Guyz have the best vegan burger around. If you want to eat good then follow these Guyz. We already told you it’s the best, it’s not a surprise.
  • Come here first for the Grind of the day. And start your morning in the most fabulous way. If you’re in Beverlywood, this is the place to go. One look at their menu and you can’t say no.
  • Roses are red, rooftop brunches are fun. If you want to brunch while downtown, then this is the one.
